PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz -- Only days after defeating Ohio State for the BCS National Championship, the Florida Gators were humbled by a little-known but important computer ranking system, the Chaos Rankings.
Although widely applauded for crushing Ohio State, the Gators fell to number two behind the only undefeated team in the nation, Boise State.
"When you work hard like that all season, it hurts to see your kids so disappointed at the number two ranking," Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "It takes a little bit out of the nonstop celebrations and rallies we've had the last two days."
Although the Chaos Rankings formula is a closely guarded secret, requiring tens of millions of calculations on a computer array, inventor Adam Bever is confident in the results.
"Maybe I should change the formula to put more weight on strength of schedule and less emphasis on one loss," Bever said. "I don't know, maybe I'll look at it tomorrow."
For BCS game MVP Chris Leak, the news was deflating.
"Although I've finally been vindicated and earned the respect of the fickle Florida fans, I know that I'll never be able to come back to school and win the Chaos Ranking trophy for Florida," Leak said. "There is a trophy or something, right?"
Florida's other star quarterback, freshman phenom Tim Tebow, had more to say about Boise State earning a higher ranking than Florida.
"It's been over two days since I've had violent contact with another man. I challenge the entire Boise State team to a game against me this Saturday to see who is the true Chaos Ranking champion," Tebow said.
Tebow was so confident that he revealed his game strategy to the Broncos coaches. "I will run up the middle on every play for four yards, and you will be powerless to stop me. Then, just when you think you have the game wrapped up, I will make a stunning pass to myself for the winning touchdown."
Tebow added one final promise with a twinkle in his eye. "Afterwards, I will crush that wimpy Adam Bever until he admits that his system sucks. Jocks rule!"
